Our 2009 Itinerary


Itinerary:

Under ideal circumstances, this will be our itinerary (similar to our 2006 attempt):

Daytime travel     Night time travel

June 18, 2009 - Fly from Denver to Anchorage.  Depart at 9:30 pm from Denver arrive at 1:00 am in Anchorage.

June 19th - Drive from Anchorage to Talkeetna, arriving at 5:00 am.  Meet with the National Park Service at 9:00 am.

WEATHER PERMITTING....

Day 1 - June 19th - Fly onto the Kahiltna Glacier (7,200 ft.) and wait until midnight to move to Camp 1 at 7,800 ft.

Day 2 - June 20th - Move up to Camp 1 at 7,800 ft in the very early morning hours.

Day 3 - June 21st - In the early morning carry gear from 7,800 ft. to ~9,800 ft. and cache, then return to 7,800 ft.

Day 4 - June 22nd - Move from 7,800 ft. to Camp 2 at 11,000 ft in the early morning.

Day 5 - June 23rd - Go back and pick up the cache we left at 9,800 ft. and return to 11,000 ft in the early morning.

Day 6 - June 24th - Carry gear to about 12,500 ft. and return to 11,000 ft in the early morning.

Day 7 - June 25th - Move from 11,000 ft. to the 14,000 ft. Camp, picking up our cache along the way.

Day 8 - June 26th - REST DAY!  Take a walk to the Edge of the World.

Day 9 - June 27th - Climb up to 16,200 ft. or 17,200 ft. to cache gear for High Camp (17,200 ft.).

Day 10 - June 28th - Rest Day.  Wait for a good weather window of 2-3 days before moving up to High Camp.

Day 11 - June 29th - Rest / weather day if necessary.

 **  In 2006, we spent 9 days at 14,000 ft. waiting for a good weather window. **

Day 12 - June 30th - Move up to High Camp at 17,200 ft.

Day 13 - July 1st - Rest / weather day if necessary.

Day 14 - July 2nd - SUMMIT DAY!

Day 15 - July 3rd - Move from High Camp at 17,200 ft. to 11,000 ft.

Day 16 - July 4th - Rest in the 11,000 ft Camp and leave for Base Camp about 10:00 pm.

Day 17 - July 5th - Move from 11,000 ft. to Base Camp at 7,200 ft. and fly out to Talkeetna for a burger and a beer.

July 6th - Drive to Anchorage and catch the Midnight flight to Denver.

July 7th - Home!

 ** The average successful expedition is on the mountain for 18 days.  Realistically, we don't expect to be off the mountain before about July 7th.  Possibly as late at July 14th. **
